These donuts are so adorable and a perfect way to celebrate Groundhog Day, no matter what his shadow shows this year!
After finding these on Instagram from the most creative twins around, Liv and I had to make them! A few years back when Liv was a little toddler, full of energy and loved to help me in the kitchen we started this little activity called Bake with Liv. We would make easy treats together that a toddler could help with and enjoy! We still bake together just not as frequently and sometimes our bakes get a little more complicated. But they are all just as sweet!
Back to these groundhog donuts, after seeing them on the twins Instagram page I knew Liv and I had to make them for Groundhog Day THAT year. That was several years ago and now the Groundhog Donuts are the sweetest tradition. We are all for adding donuts to any and all traditions, if you know my family you know that!
These donuts are not only adorable they are also delicious!! It’s so fun you get a variety of candies with your donut. They really are the most impressive donut treat we’ve “baked” together and we have had many donut “bakes”!
They also make an adorable little Valentine if you’re doing 14 Days of Love for your spouse or kids! We get fresh Chocolate Chocolate Dunford Donuts from the gas station here in Utah. You can also find them by the half dozen in Smith’s or you can buy them fresh from their store in West Jordan! They are so delicious!
This year I was wanting to make a smaller version for a preschool snack. I thought of MINI little groundhog donuts! How adorable!!
With them being so tiny you do have to take out a few details like the teeth and nose but it is totally worth it! And still looks so adorable! So much easier for little kids to enjoy!
Some tips about making these donuts:
- Melt chocolate chips. Adhere candy with a toothpick and melted chocolate.
- Get the chocolate chocolate mini or regular sized donuts! You can crumble some up for extra “dirt” around the groundhog donuts to add some extra pizzaz!
- I add all the candy pieces to the peanut butter cup then set in fridge. This makes it much easier when you try to make the whole donut so it’s not all falling apart.
- I’ll link all the things we used here! Chocolate Chocolate Donuts or Dunford Donuts, Hershey’s Drops, full sized Reese’s peanut butter cups or Miniature Reese’s peanut butter cups for mini, M&Ms or Junior Mints Minis or Reese’s Pieces, mini marshmallows, and candy eyes (I LOVE the box I linked.
- Assembling is pretty self explanatory but I do have a timelapse video below of us putting them together, and a throwback Bake with Liv talking about the ingredients needed and our final groundhogs.
It’s so crazy to think how much has changed the last few years of making these donuts. Little Liv is still little and adorable but she has changed so much! Check out the original Bake with Liv: Groundhog Donut video below!
I’d love for you to make them and tag me on Instagram or TikTok! Sharing is caring! I hope you know how much reading, liking or commenting on posts, pinning and all the little things readers do to interact and support me-really does matter and mean so much to me. So thank you!! I hope you enjoy these adorable donuts tomorrow!
Groundhog Donuts
Ingredients
- chocolate donuts mini or regular size
- Hershey Drops
- mini marshmallows marshmallow bits
- Junior Mints Minis or M&Ms
- Reese's Peanut Butter Cups regular size for large donuts, miniature for mini donuts
- candy eyes
- melted chocolate chips
Supplies Needed
- toothpick to adhere all candy together and to donut
Instructions
- Place donut flat on plate.
- Melt chocolate chips and use that as your "glue" to hold everything together. Unwrap Reese's cups.
- Add Hershey Drops for hands and cheeks, adhere with melted chocolate. I like to have them set before I prop the peanut butter cup up for the face.
- Adhere brown M&Ms or Junior Mint Minis to top of peanut butter cup for ears. Place another one in the middle of the groundhog face for the nose if using a regular sized donut and peanut butter cup.
- Add candy eyes and mini marshmallows (if you are using a regular donut).
- Can place in fridge to set the melted chocolate.
